Aarhus

Moaning Minnie, as we have christened the Sat Nav, decided to get a spot of Danish Fever. She usually shows the amount of km to the destination, which reduces as we drive. Having started on 222km, it stayed on 213 for about 100km.  As we wanted to fasttrack through Denmark on the motorway, we decided to only make one stop, approximately half way. The motorway in Denmark was a very easy drive, with motorists sticking to the speed limit, and good clear signs.

The aire was nicely situated in the marina, the price of 140 Kroner sounded extortionated, but converted to about £13.20, so actually pretty good, as it included electricity and water, etc.

At the harbour office we noticed Cty Hire Bikes (Boris Bikes) for FREE hire. use a coin to release the lock, just like a supermarket trolley. Although many cities have hire bikes, this is the first free system we have noticed. Brilliant!

We cycled into Aarhus, about 7km. Cycle paths all the way, all flat, and a really easy route: cyclists even get their own traffic lights.

First of all we went into Aarhus cathedral. We were treated to a free organ recital (practice) while we walked around. Unlike many churches, many of the original wall frescoes remain.  These lend it a charming, light and airy feel.

After the cathedral, we fancied a coffee, so sat down at one on the pavement cafes.  we were a little dismayed to find we were unable to catch the eye of either of the waiters. It felt almost as though they were totally ignoring us.  This is the first time we have felt this in the whole trip, and our uncertainty was compounded by the insecurity about the Danish language, and a brand new currency. We presently gave it us pas a bad job, and found a chain coffee bar.  Prices were ridiculous: about £16.00 for 2 coffees and cakes. However, the cakes were tasty. We will have to reduce our cake intake while we are in Scandinavia.

We had to laugh at a couple of the place names: Sommerland Syd, and Bylderup-Bov.
