Schleswig

The aire here was one of the most tightly packed we had been to, but the setting, on the lake, is lovely.

We visited the cathedral: unlike many throughout northern Germany, it is very plain and simple. Highlights are: the 16th Century carved wooden altar, a larger than life size wooden figure of St Christopher, and a carved "group carrying the cross".

We cycled to Schloss Gottorf which now houses a museum. A fascinating array of artefacts from many different periods: particularly intersting to us were the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) furniture, and a Danish Viking longship, recovered intact from the mud in the area.

As if that was not enough for one day, by chance we saw a delightful area of cottages at The Holm, mostly single storey dwellings in narrow cobbled streets, all clustered around a central cemetery and chapel.  Although historically a fishing village, it is now quite a tourist attraction. Several homeowners have taken advantage of the passing trade, and opened their own small businesses.
